Tell you a little secret of mine, I scared to death when l first took my step on the US land. At that time, I thought every American had a gun and they would kill me mercilessly with a minor difference. It didn't take a long time for me to realize that how silly I was then. Monsters do exist, but I assure you that after our first meet you will find that I am as same as those men in your daily life although we may look quite differently and I speak a language unfamiliar to you. Although I'm already 47, my past life was quite simple. I was born in China in 1973 when the whole world seemed to be enemy to us except for the Soviet Union which we called Big Elder Brother. In my childhood 99 percent of Chinese families didn't have a TV set. I was fortunate to watch one in my mother's working place, a middle school. Unfortunately, much of the knowledge she taught me was wrong since she was not a good student in college due to the cultural revolution in China. Time came to the summer holiday in 1991, a close friend of my family introduced a home tutor for me, a Russian exchange scholar in our local university. Her name is Tanya. And she was the first foreigner I met in real life. She has beautiful blue eyes like sapphire and her voice was so soft to flow through my heart. She dressed a blue skirt. I immediately fell in love with her. She taught me a lot and we spent happy times. When the new semester began, I decided to marry her after university education although she was ten years older than me. I was so shy to tell her my decision and thought there would be sufficient time. Then disaster came, the Soviet Union was suddenly collapsed at the end of 1991. Tanya's contract was cancelled and she went back to home immediately. We even didn't say goodbye and she only left a note to me. She didn't give me her address and I even didn't know her surname. Next year I would pass the college entrance test and select a major. My original thought was some one related to Russia, and imagined to go there to find Tanya. However, my father denied me. At that time, more and more Chinese students got scholarships to study in American universities and our people thought this would brought glory to their families. My father wanted me to take this path and selected a science major for me because only the students from science and technology majors could obtain fellowships without which we could not get the US visa. Although against my will, I surrender. I dare not and can not say no to my father, and this is our tradition. It was not easy for me alone in the US and the doctoral study was very challenging. Many nights I was nervous and could not get asleep. In such situations, I imagined Tanya talked to me by my ears or read short stories to me. I felt ease then. After obtained the degree, I chose to be a teacher till now. I had girlfriends before and we were in love, but when we talked about marriage I hesitated. They were all Asians who looked quite different from Tanya. Time passes, last year I made up my mind to fill my own dream. I decided to relocate to Russia and finally found an opportunity in Moscow. As planned, I was expected to begin my new career in September this year. However, with the breakout of COVID-19, everything was suspended. I am now in China to stay with my mother. She is 82 and not in good health. She tells me that her last wish is seeing me get married and have my own children. I have never made her dispointed and the tradition will follow. This is my story.
